Mayor Robert Simison delivered his 2026 State of the City address on June 3, 2026, at 3:29 p.m., hosted by the Meridian Chamber of Commerce at the Galaxy Event Center.
“Meridian is rising. Rising in the quality of our services. Rising in the ambition of our projects. Rising in the caliber of people who choose to live, serve, and build their lives here,” said Mayor Simison. “Rising because of who Meridian is and who Meridian has always been.”
The annual address focused on the key projects from the past year, recent achievements in public safety, and the future of several key developments that will change how Meridian’s economic centers evolve.
In his address, Mayor Simison shared updates on several high-priority initiatives, including:
- Breaking ground on a new community center, set to open in late 2027.
- Linder Road Overpass entering its final phase of construction over Interstate 84.
- A new Biosolids Dryer that will use renewable energy to save ratepayers $300,000 annually.
- Downtown Meridian on the verge of its most transformative chapter with Heritage Square, the former Union 93 property.
- Police department is using technology to protect the community more effectively.
- Fire Department has earned a national award for prevention work that protects families.
- And a clean financial audit for the past 10 years with a debt-free balance sheet.
The Mayor also addressed the City’s fiscal outlook, noting that Meridian continues to balance growth with a commitment to responsible budgeting. As part of the 2027 budget process, Mayor Simison announced his intent to request the allowable 3% property tax increase and utilize forgone revenue to help maintain service levels, holding discretionary spending flat and making strategic decisions on when to add or reduce staff for the benefit of residents of Meridian. These steps are being taken as State legislative actions have resulted in a now $2 million annual revenue reduction from new growth that continues to increase each year.
He also addressed actions taken during the most recent legislative session and recognized several challenges that were created by new legislation for cities this year, including:
- Further reductions in funding for cities.
- New limitation on city and neighborhood input for large residential projects.
- Eliminating tools for public safety operations.
Simison notes that despite these challenges, Meridian will continue to be a leader and advocate for policies that support local communities and ensure residents continue to see a high level of service and have a voice in local issues.
Additional priorities and partnerships highlighted in the address included:
- Expanding healthcare education in Meridian.
- Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary.
- Establishing a Meridian Auditorium District.
- Collaborating with West Ada School District to help develop the next generation of Meridian’s workforce.
- The Meridian Library District’s work to reimagine the Cherry Lane library branch.
- The removal of the Western Ada Recreation District as a separate taxing entity.
“Our local government partners are also getting it done,” says Mayor Simison. “West Ada School District continues to lead the state in academic outcomes, the Meridian Library District is delivering on their commitment to our community, and voters removed a separate taxing burden from the Western Ada Recreation District (WARD) while ensuring the Meridian Pool, Lakeview Golf Course, and other amenities continue under City management.“
The Mayor also highlighted recent high school graduates who received a $1,000 scholarship to use towards their future education goals, recognized Mountain View High School as the 2026 Watertower Championship winner, and praised this year’s Legacy Award Winner, Tracy Farnsworth, President and CEO of ICOM, for his contributions to the medical school's success and his commitment to ensuring the future of Meridian as the heart of healthcare in Idaho.
